If you’re planning a 14 Wing Greenwood relocation, one of the biggest mistakes I see families make is choosing a home based only on the member’s drive to base. That matters, of course. But in real life, your move works best when it supports both careers, childcare logistics, school routines, and the day-to-day rhythm of family life.
As someone who has helped many CAF families through a 14 Wing posting and every kind of IRP military move, I can tell you this: neighbourhood choice has a direct impact on spouse employment. - Will you need to be close to Highway 101 for regional travel?
- Are you expecting to job hunt after arrival, or are you transferring with an employer?

- Wolfville for university-related work, hospitality, tourism, and professional roles
If your spouse works in Kentville or New Minas, buying in Kingston may seem fine at first glance. But doing that drive five days a week, while also juggling a member who may have early reporting times at 14 Wing, can become exhausting fast.
Don’t choose only for the member’s commute
I understand the appeal of being five or ten minutes from 14 Wing Greenwood. For some families, that is absolutely the right choice, especially if the member is on a demanding schedule, may be called in, or wants to reduce wear and tear on one vehicle.
But I encourage you to look at the full household schedule, not just the base gate.
A good neighbourhood choice should help answer:
- Who is doing school drop-off?
- Who needs the more predictable commute?
- Is there one vehicle or two?
- What happens on snow days, sick days, or shift changes?
- Will the spouse have to rebuild a professional network from scratch?
Sometimes the best answer is to split the difference geographically. Other times, it’s smarter to live closer to the spouse’s likely employment hub and accept a slightly longer base commute.

If the spouse works in healthcare, education, or larger retail
I often tell clients to take a hard look at Kentville, New Minas, and Coldbrook.
Why:
- Larger concentration of employers
- More shopping and service-sector opportunities
- Better fit for spouses rebuilding their career network quickly
- Practical access to Valley Regional Hospital and surrounding employers
- Strong option if you want more amenities in your daily routine
The trade-off is a longer drive for the member to Greenwood. In good conditions, many families find it manageable. But you need to be honest about winter driving, fuel costs, and how often the member needs to be on base outside standard hours.
If the spouse wants a smaller-town pace with regional access
Middleton and Berwick can be very good middle-ground choices.
Why:
- More affordable options can sometimes be found compared with some east-end Valley locations
- Reasonable access to Greenwood and other Valley communities
- Good fit for families who want community feel without being too far removed
- Easier drive patterns than some buyers expect when they first map the Valley
These areas can work well for spouses in:

Wolfville can make sense, but only for the right household setup.

The caution:
- It is farther from 14 Wing Greenwood than many military buyers want
- Housing costs can be higher in some price brackets
- The member’s commute may stop feeling reasonable very quickly if schedules are demanding
Budget for the hidden cost of the “wrong” area
An IRP military move covers many relocation expenses, but it does not fix a location that makes your daily life harder.
When families choose the wrong neighbourhood for spouse employment, I often see these hidden costs show up:
- A second vehicle purchase sooner than planned
- Higher monthly fuel costs
- Extra childcare hours because of commute time
- Missed job opportunities due to location
